ABC and Disney Celebrate Student PSAs with $30,000 in Scholarships

PSA awatds

WABC-TV Channel 7 broadcast the student entries in the annual Public Service Announcement competition.
 

At this year's ABC/Disney "Get Reel with Your Dreams" award ceremony, Channel 7 Eyewitness News co-anchor Sade Baderinwa presented $30,000 in college scholarship funds to five New York City high school students for their television work creating 30-second Pubic Service Announcements (PSAs). Baderinwa created the competition three years ago to introduce public high school students to top professionals in film and television.
 
Harry S Truman High School students Ian Denton and Ernesto Gonzalez took First Place for a PSA on child abuse. High School of Art & Design students received two awards: Jaquan Franklin won Second Place for a spot on HIV, and Elena Havas and Sebastion Lema took Third Place for a PSA  on teen suicide.All three Art & Design students were Finalists in the Tenth Annual Citywide Graphic Arts Competition last May.

Herschel Bhasin of Thomas Edison H.S. Gets the Gold at SkillsUSA Internetworking Nationals


At last week's SkillsUSA Championships in Kansas City, Missouri, a student from Thomas A. Edison CTE High School in Queens became the first New York City winner of the Gold Medal in the SkillsUSA National Competition in Internetworiking.  Herschel Bhasin, a Cisco student at Edison,  joined more than 5,600 outstanding career and technical education students—all state contest winners—competing in 94 different trade, technical and leadership fields.
 
At the annual event, students work against the clock and each other, proving their expertise in occupations like electronics, computer-aided drafting, precision machining, medical assisting and culinary arts.
 
Contests are run with the help of industry, trade associations, and labor organizations, and the test competencies are set by industry partners. In all, New York State students won 8 medals in 6 different competitions in Kansas City.
 
Congratulations to all the competitiors -- and their teachers -- for putting their CTE skills on display.

HVAC Competition Showcases Hands-On Talents

The Seventh Annual Service and Installation Competition held at W.H. Grady CTE High School last week tested students of Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) technologies. Students from Grady in Brooklyn, Alfred E. Smith CTE High School in the Bronx and Saunders Trades and Technical High School in Yonkers were checked out in Burner Assembly, Combustion Analysis,  Burner Troubelshooting and Boiler Installation Completion. The event is sponsored by the NYC Service Managers Association and the Westchester Service Managers Association.

City Students Are Big Winners in Statewide SkillsUSA Contests

New York City CTE students had their best showing yet in this year's New York State SkillsUSA competition in Syracuse, April 13 – 15.  SkillsUSA New York City administrative trustee Denise Vittor spread the word congratulating the winners:

Congratulations also go to Michael Smith from Alfred E. Smith HS who is now the New York State SkillsUSA vice president representing Area 5, New York City.
 
 
*That's two wins in one month for Herschel Bhasin who also took first place in the Cisco NetRiders contest.
 

Edison Students Are Highest Scoring Cisco NetRiders Team in New York State

Herschel Bhasin and Anthony Herbert, students at  Thomas A. Edison CTE High School in Queens, are advancing to the National Finals of the 2011 Cisco Networking Academy NetRiders Skills Challenge in the High School category. The Round Three Theater Finale includes top-ranked competitors from the  United States and Canada and will be held virtually on May 6. Best of luck to Herschel and Anthony and to their teacher John Rullan.
 

Culinary Students Compete for College

Nineteen New York City high school students are competing for $500,000 in scholarship money to some of the top culinary schools in the country. Part of C-CAP, the Careers through Culinary Arts Program founded in 1990 here in New York, the cooking component of the contest took place in Chelsea last this week, the interviews are next, and the winners will be named on April 29.

SkillsUSA Championships

Category: Comprehensive (Arts, Business, Civic, Engineering, Law, 
Science, Technology)
This competition is the showcase for the best career and technical students in the nation. Contests begin locally and continue through the state and national levels. The Championships is a multi-million dollar event that occupies a space equivalent to 11 football fields. In 2004, there were over 4,500 contestants in 77 separate events. Nearly 1,500 judges and contest organizers from labor and management will make the national event possible. The philosophy of the Championships is to reward students for excellence, to involve industry in directly evaluating student performance and to keep training relevant to employers' needs.

Cisco NetRiders Skills Challenge: Registration Opens February 28!

US-Canada Cisco Networking Academy High School/Secondary Students Can Win Prizes and Accolades!

 
Cisco Networking Academy is pleased to announce the US-Canada NetRiders Virtual Skills Challenge for high school/secondary students, which will be held from March 14–May 6, 2011 (not available in Quebec).
 
NetRiders is a virtual competition leveraging Web 2.0 technologies to enhance classroom learning. Participants are encouraged to achieve high standards of competence, develop their collaborative and technical skills, and further pursue IT education and training.

The Cisco Networking Academy US-Canada NetRiders Skills Challenge is open to high school/secondary students enrolled in Cisco IT-Essentials, CCNA Discovery, or CCNA Exploration course at a Cisco Networking Academy within the past nine (9) months. The competition is geared toward the Cisco Certified Entry Networking Technician (CCENT) exam, and includes an online theoretical exam and Cisco Packet Tracer activity.

Fashion Industries Students' Designs for Allegri in the Window at Saks

Students from the High School of Fashion Industries designed handbags for men and women for the Allegri fashion house in a recent design contest, and some of their work is on display in the windows of Saks Fifth Avenue at Fifth Avenue and 49th Street. Fox Good Day New York interviewed three students and Principal Daryl Blank:

 Allegri is donating 15 percent of their total sales through October 26 to the school. Of the 34 contest winners, Allegri has manufactured five of the students' designs.
 

WABC-TV Interviews Art & Design H.S. Fashion Entrepreneurs

Students at Art & Design High School were targeted by Junior Achievement League of New York to participate in a pilot with Fashion Fantasy Game (http://www.fashionfantasygame.com/). This Internet game requires students to use their entrepreneurial skills to run an internet business. The students had to design garments, design space and market their wares. It was a mini lesson in entrepreneurship in the fashion world. The program concludes today with the announcement of the winners. The winners will have their garments constructed and a runway show will be held at Lim College on June 1. The students will also shadow at Diane von Furstenberg during the summer.
